Chadwick Arboretum Friends Update: Summer 2021

July 13, 2021
New water feature by Gazebo

Dear Friends of Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens,

With the first weeks of summer already behind us, we want to take a quick breather to share a few of the many wonderful things that are happening in the gardens.

When you walk through the Learning and Lane Ave. Gardens next time, you may notice some beautiful new plant additions. Pam Poeth and the horticulture crew planted six redbuds (Cercis canadensis) in the Learning Gardens, new cultivars of False Forget-Me-Not (Brunnera spp.) in the Forget-Me-Not Garden and planted the trough containers with fun displays of annuals. There is a new water feature next to the gazebo, too. Thank goodness for our five hardworking interns this year!

Cultivate’21 Open House:

Did you know that the premier event in the United States for the entire horticulture industry occurs at the Greater Columbus Convention Center every year in July? Cultivate, the trade show and educational event presented by AmericanHort, is known to attract more than 10,000 industry professionals and visitors from all 50 states and over 30 countries.

This past Saturday, Chadwick welcomed about 300 Cultivate ’21 attendees to our Cultivar Trials, giving us an opportunity to show off the newest cultivars we are trialing for breeders around the country. If you have not visited our Cultivar Trials yet this year, you don’t want to miss this! Many of our beds in this garden have been “adopted” by individual volunteers – a tribute to the many hands it takes to pull a garden like this together.

Tree University:

Have you attended one of our one-hour Tree University webinars yet this year? We are excited that we have a new way to connect you to quick, research-based presentations from experts about all-things trees (and some shrubs). So far, we have hosted speakers on fruit trees, lilacs, conifers, chestnuts, and shrubs.

Next week, we are hosting Kathy Smith, OSU Program Director for the Ohio Woodland Stewards Program on “Native Trees for Your Landscape.” You can register here for this free event:  go.osu.edu/nativetrees

 Tours of Chadwick:

Chadwick hosts many groups for one-hour, volunteer-led tours every year - and this year has been no exception. If your garden club, summer camp, or friends’ group are interested in a tour, we would love to show you around. You can sign up for one here.

Celebration of Life for Dr. Kenneth and Janice Reisch:

A Celebration of Life in memory of Dr. Kenneth and Janice Reisch who were dedicated to The Ohio State University and played an instrumental role in the planning of the Chadwick Arboretum, will be held on Saturday, July 17th, 2021

The family will receive friends and family between 2:00-4:00 p.m. and invite all who can stay for a time of remembrance and stories at 4:00 p.m. The celebration will be held at the Chadwick Arboretum at 2120 Fyffe Road, Columbus, Ohio or by putting “Agriculture Administrative Building” in Google Maps.
