Chadwick Arboretum Friends Update: March 2021

March 18, 2021

Dear Chadwick Arboretum Friends,

On this St. Patrick's Day, we want to take a moment to reach out and give you a quick update on the wonderful things we have planned for the next month or so. A lot is happening as we prepare for a great spring season.

Tree University

Thanks to a new group of very forward-thinking volunteers, Chadwick has a new webinar series in the works.  "Tree University" is a monthly virtual webinar focused on trees, woody plants, and other horticultural topics.  The kickoff is March 25, 2021 at 6:00 p.m.  Each session will be around 45-minutes, with plenty of time for a Q+A afterwards.

Our very own Joe Stewart, Lane Avenue Garden Volunteer, Master Gardener Volunteer, Member of the American Conifer Society, and conifer collector will be teaching about dwarf conifers for the home landscape on March 25th, 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Check out our events calendar for the link to sign up.

Day of Giving

On March 22th, consider supporting Chadwick Arboretum during the annual OSU Day of Giving! If you haven’t renewed your membership you can do so this day for $40.00.  In addition, every $5.00 donation helps us continue to work towards our mission of providing extensive plant collections for education, research, and enjoyment. Visit the website:  https://dayofgiving.osu.edu/amb/PlantingForward

The above link takes you to the OSU gift donation portal. To choose Chadwick Arboretum, click on Change Fund, then click on the Search tab.  Use the “Search for an area to support," feature, type: 306837 (Chadwick Arboretum & Learning Gardens Annual Fund) and this will pop up for you to select.  We thank you in advance if you are able to donate to Chadwick!

 Welcome Spring! Speaker Series: March 22 - 26, 10:00 a.m.

Welcome Spring with the Department of Entomology and Chadwick Arboretum’s partnership program series.  This five-part series is free when you register and takes place daily that week at 10:00 a.m.  Topics include a discussion of oaks, wasps, bees, and good garden bugs and more.  A favorite speaker of ours, Doug Tallamy, starts the series with a presentation about his new book, The Nature of Oaks.  To see the entire series and to register, go to:  https://u.osu.edu/certify/springauthors/

Arbor Day Celebrations: April 29, 6:00 p.m. and April 30th, 10:00 a.m.

This year, we are going to make up for the fact that we missed our annual Arbor Day Celebration last year.  We have two fun (virtual) events on April 29th and April 30th that we invite you to attend.   April 29th will be our third Tree University speaker at 6:00 p.m.; we are hosting author Akiva Silver from Trees of Power talking about his top 10 Trees of Power and his work with growing chestnuts on his farm in New York.

The second event will be our Arbor Day Celebration on April 30, 2021 at 10:00 a.m.  Due to the pandemic, we will present this virtually.  We will be presenting the Lorax Awards to several amazing community members who "Speak for the Trees," as well as a few other recognitions.  You won’t want to miss this one.

Register for these and other events on our Events Calendar: https://chadwickarboretum.osu.edu/events/calendar   Watch this calendar often as we continue to plan Tree University and other programs for the 2021 season.
