Phenology Garden

This garden is one of 36 sites in Ohio that includes 17 woody plants species and 15 perennial species.

The plants are closely monitored during bloom time to predict regional insect emergence allowing better planning for control of pests using growing degree days. Phenology woody plants & selected perennial plants are located along the Olentagy River Road corridor near Woody Hayes Drive. All Phenology perennial species with signature labels are incorporated within the Learning Gardens in front of Howlett Hall. The garden includes the USA National Phenology Newtowrk (USA-NPN) indicator plant Syringa x Chinensis 'Red Rothomagensis'. The USA-NPN and Canada's 50 year historical cooperative project monitors a phenological series of cloned lilac plant development. These data correlate observed changes in plant and animal behave and predict risk of target avian population collapses, biological invasions, drought, and the spread of disease.
